The BBE Sonic Maximizer uses a simple process of splitting the input
signal into highs, mids, and lows. It then delays the mids and lows
to the output (less than 2 milliseconds, so it's not a noticeable
delay).
This allows the higher frequencies to form first, without being
overpowered by the mids and lows. The clarity and definition added by
this effect is amazing. The highs are shimmering and lows are tight
and defined. Most of the models (I recomend the BBE 462) also
incorporate a "low contour" control which gives + or - 10 db at 50Hz,
great for adding thump to any system.
I use my BBE for recording to my 4-track, making dubs of any cd or
cassette, in my guitar rig, and now I hear they have an in dash model
for car audio systems.
The BBE is the the way to go. Hope this helps. :-)

Reading the maximizers thread was a rare (for me) opportunity to get a
glimpse into the overall studio setup of someone with a similiar musical
orientation and computer setup - (in that case dionf@ere.umontreal.ca
(Francois Dion) who even uses the same obscure CD model as me). dionf,
Could you elaborate - up to a rundown of the gear in your studio?
Another question that's not directly connected to GUS but that I'd
appreciate any feedback from this group: I guess many on this list
integrate home and studio sound - can anyone comment on possible use of
same amps for both home listening and for studio work? When I studied sound
that was a no-no, but in reality I did my most accurate mixes on my home
junk system... whaddayasay? any specific amp models you use?

Well, there are lots of alternatives, actually. There's the Digitech
units like the DSP-256, the Alesis units like the Multiverb 3, and
ART. I'm not sure how the are in terms of price, but I personally
have used the SPXs and the Digitechs and like the SPXs better because
I think they are more intuitive to use. Both a great units though.

The BBE adds a "spatial" quality, or openness. It's used to enhance
stereo imaging. (I'm assuming you're talking about the BBE Sonic
Maximizer.) There are even used in some home stereo setups to help
the imaging. I've listened to both units and wouldn't necessarily say
that they are interchangeable. The Aphex makes a much larger impact
on the overall sound. Like you said, it helps the highs and the lows,
kinda of like an EQ. The Aphex will make the most noticeable
difference. I would so go with that.

If this is what you are looking to do I would definately go w/ the
Aphex. The BBE wouldn't do much for playback on boomboxes and stuff
like that. Speaking of 808 drums, I can't get kick1 to sound like
anything other than a click. All the other patches sound fine. Any
ideas?
>I have software to do that, but where the SPX900 shines is for realtime

That's true. Would you be able to run it via the GUS MIDI port
concurrently while using the GUS MIDI synth? That's the way to do it,
and everything would be in sync.

Yup. And for live stuff, you can automote your effects switching
which is a real help.

First, I would say a good 1/3 octave EQ, and after that the Aphex
because the BBE is concerned more with imaging that with the actual
tone. Later...

Subject: How to use bank 1, 2, 3 etc
When I have installed more banks than only Bank 0,
I can't get to them. When I change banks in Cakewalk, or Recording Session
I keep getting Bank 0.
I've installed the bank properly, because emixer.exe recognizes it and
can load the patches from it. Back in my music program I can't access them
The Patchmanager also doesn't support more Banks. So maybe the current
GUS-drivers don't support this.
Hmm funny, I can make samples with Gus (not the best but it is possible)
.Stil waiting for the 16-Bit board....
I can make patches out of them (even multisampled) with Patchmaker,
and now I can't use them (or I'll have to replace existing patches)
The best thing would be a Patchmanager that shows all the instrument numbers,
when you click on one of them you get a file-list-box and you can walk to
the Dirs to find the .PAT file you want to load on that instrument number,
click on it and the loading is done. A database in wich you can store loaded
configurations is also something that would be nice then.
For Patch-Caching apps, there has to be a list with all the .PAT files with
the intrument numbers -> The ULTRASND.INI file. Since I'm making
house, swing-beat and rap music. I can't always use the GM-patches.
So I can't use patch-caching apps.
If someone is can make this sort of patch-manager
It would be really really nice. (I don't know how to do it)
Cubase Windows doesn't support Patch-Caching yet :-))) and I like that program
most. But before I buy it I want to have it all work.
I think also that in the future (more people want the patchmanager described
above) there has to be a Patchmanager like it is now. And
the one above described. Windows-Midi Programs also must have a
option to switch the patch-caching on and off.
Okay, there are people longing for Patch-Caching-Aware-Apps, I want to get
rid of this method, and want to use my GUS as a MIDI sampler and not as
a GM module.

Subject: I have another question
Hey, while I'm at it, I have another question. I am looking at a MIDI
controller, and I found one that is cheap, but doesn't have aftertouch ad
velocity sensitive keys. Does the GUS support these under programs like
Recording Session adn Cakewalk? Is this something I should have?
And sorry to appear ignorant, but the GUS support things like sustain
pedals and MOD wheels connected to the MIDI controller. I especially would
like to be able to use sustain (for piano patches).
Any help REALLY appreciated.

Subject: more on patches
Oh, regarding the possible replacement patches, i have some comments:
in one PROsomething set, there is a nice Rhodes piano. The fellow
suggest to put it on something like the electric grand, i think.
However, you shouldn't do this. The rhodes should be replacing
epiano1, which is a rhodes according to GM. While on the subject of
epiano, the epiano2 that comes with the GUS is better than the
suggested replacement, and for epiano1, well, you already are
replacing it with rhodes.pat... Also, i've improved the enveloppes so
if the creator of rhodes says it's ok, i'll upload it. From the same
person (i'm not very good with names, with all the email i get you
know...), there is a nice flute (a "flute traversiere"). It is a
replacement for flute. Also, i think that flute.pat that comes with
the GUS should replace woodflt.pat (or however it is spelled). There
is also my acguitar and accordeon (did i put the bug free versions on
epas?) that are GM replacements, the bongos (hi and lo) from propats1,
the cleangtr from another propats, my church organ, Phat's choir
(combine gothic with choir, it's great!), pascal's hitbrass, Chris's
c550vbsp vibraslap (or the 727 one) and well percussions there is a
huge choice. A few from the R1000 (BTW, what machine is that?? I know
of Casio R100, Roland R100, Yamaha R100 and Kawai R100, but i dont
remember any R1000. probably a roland...), some from Pascal, some from
propats1, some from the various x0x depending if you want electronic
or real etc...
I have not talked about the IDM patch sets, but of course in there you
will find a bunch of drums (like the R70, 707, 606, 808 etc...), real
instruments (acguitar, acpiano, b3, rec, fender, mutegtr, fretless,
acbass, brtpiano, church etc...), analog synths (SCI Six Trak, Moog,
Juno, MKS7, Prophet, TB303, JX3P, jupiter 8 etc...), special fx
(scratchs, bubbles, helicopter, fantasia, bleepees, motors, guns,
melodic noises, spacey noises, environmental noises etc...). That's 4
patch sets of 3 1.44 disks, and there are 5 more sets under
completion. More drums, more analogs, breaks, industrial noises...
Those who have inquired about these patch sets will receive the info
this weekend thru email. I'm building a list to batch send it.
Ciao,

Very good suggestions. I have changed accordingly. I think the suggested MIDI
patch or drum key should not be put as a separate entry right now though,
since this is subject to change when Gravis/Forte has finalized the patch
banking system. I have put it instead under the description field.

Yes, I think there needs to be some order to bank numbering so when patch
banking is available, it is easy to add new banks and to play midi files
which can use them directly.
Having said that, it is very difficult to assign banks in this way (without
going into a 3 digit figure). Most authors release about 2-5 patches at one
shot, and each of them can go into any category and any bank -- unless there
are people working on some kind of "standard" set of add-on patches, ( the
currently available Roland drum kits are examples of such possibilities).

From: dionf@ere.umontreal.ca (Francois Dion)
Subject: Patch time
Ok, on the subject of standard patch sets and what should be used
etc...
I'll do a refresh of what is already cast in stone:
GM sounds: 0 to 127, as you can find in the ULTRASND.INI in the
melodic and bank0 sections. GM percussions: 27 to 87. Patch manager
is not up to date regarding that. patch 27= High Q, 28= Slap, 29=
Scratch Push, 30= Scratch Pull, 31= Sticks, 32= Square Click, 33=
Metronome Click, 34= Metronome Bell. 82= Shaker, 83= Jingle Bell, 84=
Belltree, 85= Castanets, 86= Mute Surdo, 87= Open Surdo.
All that is for bank 0. Note that you can significantly increase the
patch size and still be compatible with games by making on top of
\midi, a \bank0 directory and there you put an upgraded patch set for
you own music, but still following GM all the way. That will help you
compare between the current patch and replacement patch and in future
upgrades too.
Now bank 32 is bank 0 (GM standard set also). This is important to be
compati- ble with the sound canvas and some other synths. Other
important banks:
Variation page 8 (bank 8) in which you have 29 variations from bank 0.
Variation page 16 (bank 16) in which you have 3 (!) variations from
bank 0.
Sound fx variations, which are really in the same pages as variations,
but there are more pages: page 1 has 7 replacements for the fx in the
standard set: 120= Guitar fret noise, 122= seashore, 123= bird tweet,
124= telephone ring, 125= Helicopter, 126= Applause, 127= Gunshot.
Page 2 has also 7 replacements for these patches, while page 3 has 5,
page 4 has 4, page 5 has 4, page 6 has 1, page 7 has 1, page 8 has 1
(to be added to the 29 other sounds for page 8 which gives 30 sounds
in the bank 8) and page 9 has 1.
Percussion banks:
bank 8 which is the room set with 6 replacements for bank 0.
bank 16 is the power set with 8 replacements.
bank 24 is the electronic set with 10 replacements
bank 25 is the TR-808 set with 20 replacements
bank 40 is the brush set with 3 replacements
bank 48 is the orchestra set with 25 replacements
bank 56 is the sound fx set with 38 replacements
and finally some devices have a bank 127 for CM-64/MT-32 compatibility with
33 replacements for MT32 plus an additional 34 for the CM-64 (the CM64 has
67).
I propose bank 26 for my "Soft" IDM TR set and bank 27 for my "Hard"
IDM TR set unless there is currently a machine using bank 26 and 27.
It is compatible with bank 25 in both case. Here is bank 25 and 26
using my patches, bank 27 will follow. I will also post the other
banks, since my sets pretty much cover all of these patches.

Note that you can have both banks pointing to the same directory which
will save you some disk space. I did them separately so i had to
develop them in two directories. Also, if the software you are using
doesn't support bank switching, you can simply rename [Drum Bank N]
where N=25 or 26 or whatever, back to 0 and rename bank 0 to something
else. That way, you just restart windows and it will access the whole
new bank of electronic drums.

In my opinion, melodic patches which really need replacement include:
ALL the saxes, distortion guitar, harpsichord, acoustic grand piano
These are some of the patches which I wanted to use fairly often but
had to substitute with other patches (from the Gravis set) as I
couldn't take these ESPECIALLY the saxes and the harpsi.
There doesn't seem to be anything on the percussion side that is in as
dire need of replacement as the above melodic patches.
Well, that's my 2 cents.
Mike.
Oh yes, didn't Gravis say that the FULL 3.1 disk set includes a new
patch set (which us registered owners will have to buy if we want), or
is this the same patch set as the 2.x series??

Subject: Questions about the Gus.
I am thinking about buying a GUS, but have just a couple of questions.
I would use it primarily for music (yeah, I know, no teh greatest, but I'm
not a professional). The question is this:
If I get some other patches, and want to use them, it sounds like you have
to rewrite some .INI files? Is this the case? How exactly do you have to go
about using other patches? Doesn't patch manager let you load whatever
pathces are in your MIDI directory onto the GUS DRAM? If not, does anyone
know of any easier way to handle patches? Thanks in advance.
